Hybrid Heat Pulse™

BMP Enterprises has developed a new technology called Hybrid Heat Pulse. With growing markets in CO2 injection and CO2 sequestration the need for a surface controlled downhole heat source and precise temperature measurement device is on the increase as well.

BMP Enterprises new technology incorporates both heater elements and optical fibers encased in a continuous 1/4" stainless steel tube.  The use of a hybrid cable allows for easier downhole deployment, uniform heating, precise temperature measurement and cost reduction in the composition of the cable.

The heater elements are constructed of a proprietary material having a very low resistance allowing for less power consumption and more uniform heat distribution, more so than copper.

The cable can be deployed downhole externally via production tubing, production casing or horizontally adjacent to or in direct contact with surface or buried pipelines.  A variable voltage transformer (VARIAC) device will power the heating elements. The VARIAC can be adjusted manually to supply varying levels of voltage and current depending on the application. Automated controllers can also be utilized to regulate the voltage on a precise time basis.

The DTS surface interrogator and the optical fiber within the cable compromise the temperature measurement components of the system monitoring events every 1-meter from end to end. In a double-ended system where the fiber forms a closed loop, the DTS can measure every 1-meter from end to end and back allowing for greater accuracy and higher resolution. There are several types of DTS devices available with varying strength, accuracy and resolution based on need and the application.

BMP has built (2) 1000-foot lengths. One has been retained for internal testing at BMP. A leading university in the field of fiber optics, has purchased the other 1000 ft. length for a ground soil saturation study being conducted in 2010 - 2011.  Although limitations and specifications are not fully established early results are very promising.
